As a David and Nancy Speer Visiting Professor of Finnish studies I’m pleased co-sponsor a visit to the UMN campus of Professor Markus Jäntti.

As a Visiting Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation, he is presently working on a cross-national study of intergenerational socio-economic mobility (with Timothy Smeeding).
Dear Gofdans: Happy to announce the birth of our son. Joonas Kalervo was born on Good Friday at 2:30 pm. 7lb 2oz, 19 inches. Both Wendy & Joonas are healthy and doing well.
What a smart kid to time his birth for Spring Break!
I am pleased to sponsor a talk by Professor Markus Jäntti here at the UMN. It takes place at the Minnesota Population Center in March 27.
Dr. Jäntti is the research director of the Luxembourg Income Study - a cross national comparative project to study welfare state outcomes. He is currently a fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation, working on a book about cross-national differences in socio-economic mobility. His talk at the MPC will illustrate a new component of the LIS: The Luxembourg Wealth Study. (See the MPC flyer attached).
In keeping with our commitment to scholarly excellence, I am pleased to announce that three Doctoral Fellows has joined our ranks for the period of three months (January-March). They will be associated with the Department of Political Science. They coming to Minnesota is made possible by the GOFDANS resources. They will be working mainly on issues related to humanitarianism. They are from the University of Tampere, Finland. I am sure that they will be eager to contribute to the University community generally and also to the Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer –activities. What follows is a brief
Dear Friends: I had a chance to visit Finland last week. My trip coincided with the broadcast of the TV-documentary about the recent tour of the Lannen-Jukka String Band around the Lake Superior area. (J. Karjalainen and his band). As you may recall, the tour culminated in two events here in MPLS: Suomi-Finland Social Club at the UMN Immigration History Research Center and a concert at the Nordic Roots Festival (Cedar Cultural Center). This whole experience was filmed by Mr. Erkki Maattanen of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE).
Greeting from the unusually warm and rainy Finnish December. I just arrived here with professor Raymond "Bud" Duval and a graduate student Denis Kennedy. Our aim is to hold a two day conference on the theme of "Humanitarianism". This international seminar is partly funded by the professorship. Other funding comes from the Finnish International Studies Association and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
