We are pleased to announce that we have received enough funding (thanks to a supplementary grant from Dean Wippman) to create a fifth PIC grant of $4,500-- bringing the total amount raised (excluding the ALP grant) to $18,000!!! We are currently preparing a class action law suit against the SD Department of Social Services for 30 years of violations of the ICWA and other egregious civil rights abuses which occur in the foster care system. This will be a precedent setting case since such a class action has never been undertaken before.
The Environmental Law Society will be having its annual Earth day celebration in Auerbach tomorrow. All you have to do is show up, have some beer, food, and sit around listening to some music. There will also be free plants! (Basil).

BarBri, which provides preparation for the bar exam, was kind enough to give MJF a gift certificate for half off a Barbri course -- and you can have it for only $1000! Half a BarBri course is quite a bit more than that, but we want to save you some money. We will put the full $1000 toward our student-funded summer clerkships.

1. Volunteer Placements
Beginning December 1 (tomorrow!), volunteer placements will open on the MJF website. Volunteering is a great way to serve the community, get practical experience, and meet practicing attorneys. You can also learn what areas of law interest you by your volunteer work.
Street Law is presently recruiting volunteers for its Spring 2008 efforts! We are aiming for 11 students per law school.
MJF and the Street Law coordinator, Seth Tryninewski, will hold an info session on Tuesday, November 27, at 12:15 in Room 30. Please come to ask questions, get ideas and hear how you can be part of this very cool program.
BIOFUELS! They sound interesting, but what the heck are they??
-Biofuels are considered a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing an alternative to fossil fuels -But there are potential negative impacts too (that's right, there is treehuggers!)

We have a new short-term volunteer opportunity that just came up. The YMCA is sponsoring a Youth in Government program. Law students will help with the initial stages of writing an appellate brief, and possibly with oral argument preparation. Volunteers are needed TOMORROW, Saturday 11/3/07 (Hastings Middle School, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm). Saturday 11/10/07 (Elk River High School, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm; Fridley Middle School, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm). They prefer students who have been on moot court or done other appellate work.

Next week we're hosting the Professor Talent Show, featuring over a dozen faculty and staff from the law school. The show features the Co-Deans, Dean Keyes, and many more. Check out our table in the subplaza during lunch to see the all-star lineup!
If you are going to the "MJF 25th Anniversary Dinner" with friends, you can reserve a table if you have 10 people and pay under one person's name. Just let Janine (MJF Executive Director - located at the law school) and Pat in the MJF office know that is what you want to do. Otherwise, if you feel social - individual tickets are sit where ever.

Andrew Voss: the chair of MJF's Board of Directors, Andrew spoke about his participation in MJF. He was a summer clerk for MJF while in law school, then joined the board shortly after he began practice. Serving as a clerk helped him develop skills that he later used in practice. He has served on the board for several years. He has maintained a commitment to public

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In honor of that fact this is an opportunity to support a local organization that offers legal help to battered women in the twin cities.

Time to get your feet wet for those new to NETWORKING!
The State Bar Association is putting on a Law Student Mixer / Meet and Greet Event with practicing attorneys. You may have seen the flyer around school. Probably a good idea to go and get that started. You'll also see students from other area law schools.
However, the FBI is considered in the public interest field.
For those thinking about a career with the FBI, Special Agent Pat Kelly will be giving a presentation tomorrow (Wed) on opportunities with the Federal Bureau of Investigations. This is an event open to both the undergraduate school as well as to the law school so there will be a mixed crowd and information.
As we approach our third week of classes, we'd like to recap the chapter meeting on Tuesday and pass along a few updates.

Steve Marchese, Dean Keyes, and new staff attorney Sarah Pollex all spoke at the meeting. Each told of the value of public service in law school -- not just for your resume, but for the community as a whole. Volunteers provide a valuable service to many organizations beyond the law school's doors.
MJF is recruiting Street Law volunteers! Over the course of the fall semester, Street Law volunteers will work with at-risk area high school students to teach them the important elements of preventative law. Street Law teaches these students about their rights, responsibilities and the legal resources available to them.
Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, April 24 for the Public Service Program's Recognition Ceremony from 4:45 - 7:00 PM. The ceremony will include remarks from Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson.
