History of Women in Sports
As you may know, the Womenâs Basketball Final Four is in Minneapolis this weekend, so it is important to look back at the history of and the relatively recent advancements for women in the athletic world.
Historically in some civilizations, women were encouraged to participate in sports on many different continents, mainly for religious or spiritual purposes. There is evidence that women from Ancient Greece participated in a few Olympic events. Certain indiginious tribes in Africa and America had women participate

While many of us want to use this week to get ahead and volunteer, it is important that we use this time to relax and reenergize. Taking time off for a vacation has incredible health benefits, such as stress reduction, heart disease prevention, improved productivity, and better sleep. While we live in a world and work in a career that is constantly racing each other, take some time now and later in life for yourself and enjoy a vacation.
Midterms, papers, projects, oh my! It all feels daunting. However, there are only 10 more days until Spring Break! We believe in you! And, never forget, we are all in this together <https://youtu.be/DykVJl6wr_4>!

Next week we will be starting our elections process. As a âCampus Life Programâ, our elections are law school wide, meaning anyone (even nonmembers) can try to run for our general board. We have 4 board member positions open to a general election and 3 subcommittee elections which will be done internally by each subcommittee. Board members facilitate

We know this is a week late, but donât worry we extended the deadline. New Semester, New Opportunities
Welcome back Golden Gophers! A new semester is upon us! With a new start brings a great opportunity to start on the right foot. This is another reminder that the NAMI Connection Support Group begins tonight, January 19th from 5-6:30pm. The group will meet in Mondale Hall room 475.
If you cannot attend tonight, you can still attend in the future! Please drop by throughout the semester! The group will take place the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
With the end of winter break approaching quickly, WBI wants to alert you to an opportunity starting next week. WBI has partnered with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) to bring a peer-led support group to Mondale Hall twice a month. This will be a support group for University of Minnesota Law students with mental illness who want to connect with others with similar experiences. The group will be facilitated by a trained NAMI connections leader and a UMN law student, Sierra Grandy. Please see the attachment for more details!
We would like to wish all law students good luck on finals. To the 3Ls just ready to get to May, to the 2Ls who came into law school under unprecedented circumstances, and to the 1Ls who are still trying to adjust to this thing we call law school, WBI knows that you have put in so much work and it will pay off! As the last newsletter of the semester, I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes.
As you likely have read in our newsletters, WBI has compiled a comprehensive outline bank to support your finals preparation. *We write today with an exciting update*: the Journal of International Law and Minnesota Law Review have agreed to add outlines to our collection! Many of these outlines are from recent years. We are proud to continue building the community culture upon which Minnesota Law prides itself. You can access the outline bank here <https://sites.google.com/umn.edu/wbi/resources/academic-resources/outlines>, which we will update if we receive additional outlines. At this point, each journal has contributed to our outline bank â thank
With Thanksgiving coming and going, we are finally on the last stretch of the year. With final exams and paper deadlines approaching it is important to understand our stress and how it can be positive, but also how we can take healthy breaks from studying and life to relieve our stress to restore some calmness and serenity.
Gratitude. The willingness to show appreciation and return kindness to others. It is a giving cycle that consequently benefits the giver as well. Health benefits of giving gratitude include improving relationships, self-care, and sleep, and it can give you a happiness that lasts. Go out and give kindness to the world because you never know how a selfless act might benefit you! Survey/Falafel Party

Beginning after spring break, a law student sobriety group will begin meeting regularly at school. This group is for individuals who desire sobriety, consciously make this choice, and would benefit from a space for supportive dialogue. Sobriety is loosely defined, and not confined to alcohol. This group will be malleable to the needs of those interested, meaning it can be an informal space for dialogue or take on more formality as a 12-step program. This is not a space for policing, and sustained sobriety is not mandatory.

*Weekly Yoga* Weekly yoga sessions start today, February 3rd! WBI invites you to participate in a 30-minute weekly commitment to being mindful. Exercise attire is not needed but keep in mind there will be light movement and stretching.

Once we match groups it is up to individual groups to connect and plan exactly how often they want to swap and the foods to make.

Please encourage your friends and classmates to take the survey as well. The survey was created to gather data on our community and identify areas for improvement, and the more responses we receive, the better our data will be and the greater the impact we are able to have.
Our planning team kickoff was last week, and we loved hearing your ideas for events, activities, and initiatives for the year! Those ideas are compiled here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RzgSskJ-aCuprdIg1yi-JEYf_3LhU5pAyofF5lmKwAM <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RzgSskJ-aCuprdIg1yi-JEYf_3LhU5pAyofF5lmKwAM>
If youâre interested in joining a planning team, you have until midnight tonight to indicate your interest here: z.umn.edu/wbi-team <http://z.umn.edu/wbi-team>
Teams will set their own agenda and meeting schedule, so class and work conflicts can all be accommodated. Please contact us with questions. Thank you!
The Mental Health Committee is assembling care packages for 1Ls entering their first midterms, and we need your help to support them!
Tomorrow (October 2nd), WBI will be tabling in the subplaza from 10:00-4:00 with the bags for the care packages. We would love to see you stop by, grab some candy, and write a quick good luck message or drawing on one of the bags.
As a reminder, the Planning Teams will meet for the first time tomorrow (Thursday) in Room 3 over the lunch hour!
If youâre interested in planning events, programs, or policies to impact well-being at the law school, we hope youâll join us. If youâre planning on receiving a transcript notation, this is also one of the ways to do so (more info about notation requirements is available at z.umn.edu/wbi <http://z.umn.edu/wbi>).
